"Minnesota" (Mountain Goats cover), 2015-07-12

I said in my last post that it was hard not to play Mountain Goats songs all the time, but well, sometimes it's easy not to do everything. It's been one of those times.

This song makes it a little easier to not not do everything, though.

"Tulsa Imperative" (Mountain Goats cover), 2015-06-22

There are a lot of Mountain Goats songs, and almost all of them are really, really good. It's hard not to just play them all the time.

"Tulsa Imperative", from 1993, is no exception.

"Never Quite Free" (Mountain Goats cover), 2015-06-19

Here's another Mountain Goats cover. My cat Spreckles is in it for about the last five seconds, which means you have to watch it all because it wouldn't be right to just fast-forward.

"For Real" (Bob Franke cover), 2015-06-18

I had a song I was going to play today. Then yesterday evening happened, and that song was no longer appropriate.

This one is, I hope. It's by Bob Franke, one of the most undersung songwriters I know of.

"Plenty to Cry About", 2015-06-17

After a month of traveling (without an instrument... I guess I could have recorded a capella songs, but just because you can doesn't mean you should), I'm back and posting daily videos again! One day at a time, that is.

If you were one of the six people at the bar at the open mic at Lamppost Pizza in south Reno last night, you heard this already. Even if you did, this one never has the same melody twice.

"Georgia O" (Nields cover), 2015-05-20

This is a cover of a song by The Nields, who I haven't listened to much lately and that's too bad, because they are awesome.

I did several bold things, besides playing a song I previously hadn't really listened to in years! I transcribed the chords myself, since the Internet does not apparently know what they are, and I still don't either but I hope this is pretty faithful. I left off the last verse because you don't need to hear me singing for that long. And I made a lyrical change. I am normally pretty uncomfortable about deviating from authorial intent, but I figured I would try it and see how it felt.

The song itself is about having people who inspire you even if you only know them through their art. I remember hearing this for the first time and being delightfully shocked that someone who was writing songs now would write a song mentioning being inspired by Ani DiFranco, because at the time, I was inspired by Ani DiFranco. I have other inspirations now, who brought me back to this feeling that Nerissa Nields captured.

"Free Feedin'", 2015-04-20

Fortunately, I'm on a trip! Unfortunately, that means I don't have my keyboard with me. Fortunately, the friends I'm staying with have a piano! Unfortunately, it's out of tune.

This means you get a video I made on April 20, before I made this journal. This is a parody of "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty. I wrote the words. My cats aren't in the video, but it is about my cats.

"Numb from the Waist Down", 2015-05-15

This is a song that I wrote about not having any feelings. It turns out that when you try to write a song about not having any feelings, that song turns out being kind of hard to perform. Who knew, right?

My cat Spotty, who is pretty good at informing me of her feelings, is in it.

"Beans Tomorrow", 2015-05-16

This morning I got inspired by [twitter.com profile] mountain_goats yelling at [twitter.com profile] scotte_allen and wrote a song. Scott E. Allen is the mendacious assclown who introduced a bill into the Wisconsin state legislature barring SNAP recipients from using food stamps to pay for dried beans, as well as any other foods he doesn't think are "healthy". (I don't know where he received his doctorate in nutrition.)

Sure, calling politicians "assclowns" doesn't solve any problems, but trying to control what poor people put in their bodies doesn't either. And the latter is pretty fucking personal to me, since I grew up on, and ate food by virtue of, public assistance from birth to age 16.

There are only so many synonyms for "assclown", though, so after joining in the Twitter yelling for a bit, I thought about the bigger picture and wrote this song.

Grazing yogurt pretzels
From the bins at Stop & Shop
I wonder if the creeping feeling's
ever gonna stop
Iran-Contra on TV
every single day
I don't know what's happening but
I know I'm gonna pay

"Strange Fire" (Indigo Girls cover), 2015-05-15

Today's cover goes out to all of you out there who have ever been wrong on the Internet, but especially to me.

This is a song I used to listen to when I was 15. I had no idea what I thought it meant at the time. When I run into people that age who like the Mountain Goats, I always wonder what it is they like, just because I know that when I was 15 (or 26) I would have been totally resistant to understanding most of their songs. But then, I guess I must have been getting something out of the Indigo Girls at the time, so maybe I don't give either 15-year-old me or other 15-year-olds enough credit!

"Battle Hymn of the Tiger Cub", 2015-05-14

I wrote the words for this song; it's to the tune of "Battle Hymn of the Republic". It's a second take on a response I wrote four years ago to excerpts from Amy Chua's book _Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother_. Since then, Chua claimed that her words were taken out of context and at some point in the book she does an about-face on endorsing abuse, but you know, she still has a platform that the rest of us don't get.

Here's what my platform is.

"Break in the Cup" (David Wilcox cover), 2015-05-12

This is not a song that I wrote, because I had one I thought I was in a mood to do, but then was no longer in that mood.

Nor is this a Mountain Goats song! It's by David Wilcox. But in my headcanon, this is one of the possible outcomes in an alternate universe where the Alpha Couple get therapy. Don't question my headcanon.

"Black Molly" (Mountain Goats cover), 2015-05-10

This is a fun song to sing, or at least it is if you're in a certain mood, which I was yesterday. I don't think I did it as much justice as I maybe could, but I also don't think I am going to get that mood back anytime soon (at least I certainly hope not to), so this is what you get. On the plus side, this video has two virtues:

  • my cat Spotty is in the entire thing
  • it's only 2:08

I have only one other thing to say about the song itself, which is: F♯ major, what the fuck?

"Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod" (Mountain Goats cover), 2015-05-10

Happy Mother's Day! Nothing exists that reflects how I feel about my mother (except for some stuff I've written that I can't do yet), so I had to do this song, which is about somebody else's stepfather but still rings true as heck for me today. (and let's be honest, every day.)

"This Year" (Mountain Goats cover), 2015-05-09

I could ask about this song: "what do I have to add to 'This Year'?" The answer in the first version of it that I did a month ago (which you may have seen if you're on Facebook) was: cats. The answer today is nothing, but that's okay, because I'm just doing these to learn. Besides, I think I did it a little bit better than I did it a month ago!

I didn't get to posting a video yesterday, because I went out early for a meeting and then accidentally drove to Sand Mountain.

This is a song that I wrote after that, called "Sand Mountain".

I also moved the keyboard to a different room. You care.
